The contest to succeed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has begun after he announced he is resigning as Conservative Party leader. Johnson said Thursday he would remain as prime minister until a successor is chosen. The attorney general of England, Suella Braverman, is the only candidate so far to publicly announce she would seek the position. Other prominent contenders include former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak and former Health Secretary Sajid Javid, who both resigned Tuesday. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, new Treasury chief Nadhim Zahawi and Defense Secretary Ben Wallace are also considered possible candidates. Former health and foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt is said to still have ambitions to lead the U.K.
Egypt's state-run news agency says eight people were killed and 44 injured in a car crash near the southern province of Aswan. The crash took place on Thursday when a passenger bus collided with a truck on a highway linking Awsan to Abu Simbel, the seat of the ancient temples of Ramses II, MENA said. Deadly traffic accidents claim thousands of lives every year in Egypt, which has a poor transportation safety record. The crashes and collisions are mostly caused by speeding, bad roads or poor enforcement of traffic laws.

Two leading human right groups are accusing Egyptian authorities of failing to conduct an impartial and transparent investigation into the suspicious death in custody of an economic researcher. In a joint statement Thursday, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International accused Egyptian prosecutors of turning a blind eye to evidence that 48-year-old Ayman Hadhoud disappeared, was tortured, and was denied access to timely healthcare. Hadhoud's whereabouts were unknown for two months by the time he was pronounced dead in April. The Interior Ministry said then that he had died in the government-run Abbasiya Mental Health Hospital in Cairo where he was brought for allegedly attempting to break into an apartment in Cairo.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a prison attack in Nigeria’s capital which freed nearly 900 inmates including 60 of its members. Nigerian security forces on Thursday continued to search for at least 400 escaped prisoners still at large. While Nigeria has suffered multiple jailbreaks in recent years, the attack this week was the first in the nation’s capital within that period — which analysts say points to a “failure of intelligence.” The Islamic State West Africa Province said in a statement that the attack on the Kuje prison was carried out in 50 minutes by three groups: One attacked the prison’s gate, another stormed the prison and the third blocked the road leading to the facility.
