ORLANDO, Fla. — For Wendy Vargas, the recent elimination of a constitutional right to abortion — and the banning of the procedure in many Republican-controlled states — is an affront to her values as both a woman and an American.

"This is supposed to be a first-world country," said the 32-year-old Colombian immigrant and independent voter who leans Republican. "We're supposed to have more freedoms here."

Boris Johnson said he’ll step down as UK prime minister, bringing the curtain down on a tempestuous three years in office marred by a succession of scandals that culminated in the rebellion of his own cabinet and parliamentary group.

The contest to succeed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has begun after he announced he is resigning as Conservative Party leader. Johnson said Thursday he would remain as prime minister until a successor is chosen. The attorney general of England, Suella Braverman, is the only candidate so far to publicly announce she would seek the position. Other prominent contenders include former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak and former Health Secretary Sajid Javid, who both resigned Tuesday. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, new Treasury chief Nadhim Zahawi and Defense Secretary Ben Wallace are also considered possible candidates. Former health and foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt is said to still have ambitions to lead the U.K.

Egypt's state-run news agency says eight people were killed and 44 injured in a car crash near the southern province of Aswan. The crash took place on Thursday when a passenger bus collided with a truck on a highway linking Awsan to Abu Simbel, the seat of the ancient temples of Ramses II, MENA said. Deadly traffic accidents claim thousands of lives every year in Egypt, which has a poor transportation safety record. The crashes and collisions are mostly caused by speeding, bad roads or poor enforcement of traffic laws.

Boris Johnson wanted to be like his hero Winston Churchill: a larger-than-life character who led Britain through a time of crisis. He was felled by crises of his own making as a trickle of ethics allegations became a flood that engulfed his government and turned his Conservative Party against him. Johnson resigned Thursday after the chorus of disapproval became too much. It lowers the curtain on the career of one of the most divisive politicians Britain has ever known. Biographer Andrew Gimson called Johnson “the man who takes on the Establishment and wins.” But for critic and former member of parliament Rory Stewart he was “probably the best liar we’ve ever had as prime minister.”

There will be at least one first-time Grand Slam finalist when the women’s semifinals finish at Wimbledon. Ons Jabeur and Tatjana Maria will play in the first match on Centre Court. Neither has ever been this far at one of the four major tennis tournaments. Simona Halep will take on Elena Rybakina in the second match. Halep won the Wimbledon title in 2019 and the French Open the year before. Rybakina is playing at the All England Club for only the second time. She lost in the fourth round last year. The women’s final will be played Saturday.

The presidents of Poland and Lithuania are meeting NATO troops on both sides of their border to demonstrate the alliance’s defense readiness at a location regarded as a strategically important bottleneck. The 70-kilometer (43-mile) Suwalki Gap is wedged between Russia’s exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus, a Russia ally. It also links Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia to other NATO members and has drawn special attention during Russia’s war in Ukraine. Polish President Andrzej Duda and Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda planned to observe an exercise in Poland by a mobile command unit of the U.S.-led Multinational Division North East. The two are then traveling to Lithuania to meet a German-led logistical battalion.

Two leading human right groups are accusing Egyptian authorities of failing to conduct an impartial and transparent investigation into the suspicious death in custody of an economic researcher. In a joint statement Thursday, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International accused Egyptian prosecutors of turning a blind eye to evidence that 48-year-old Ayman Hadhoud disappeared, was tortured, and was denied access to timely healthcare. Hadhoud's whereabouts were unknown for two months by the time he was pronounced dead in April. The Interior Ministry said then that he had died in the government-run Abbasiya Mental Health Hospital in Cairo where he was brought for allegedly attempting to break into an apartment in Cairo.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a prison attack in Nigeria’s capital which freed nearly 900 inmates including 60 of its members. Nigerian security forces on Thursday continued to search for at least 400 escaped prisoners still at large. While Nigeria has suffered multiple jailbreaks in recent years, the attack this week was the first in the nation’s capital within that period — which analysts say points to a “failure of intelligence.” The Islamic State West Africa Province said in a statement that the attack on the Kuje prison was carried out in 50 minutes by three groups: One attacked the prison’s gate, another stormed the prison and the third blocked the road leading to the facility.

The European Union’s executive is warning that the continent is facing one of its toughest years when it comes to natural disasters like droughts and wildfires because of increasing climate change. EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic says that “the present drought in Europe could become the worst ever.” Extremely dry weather is hitting several Mediterranean nations and fires ravage huge swaths of countryside. Sefcovic says that "statistics show that since 2017, we have the most intense, intense forest fires ever seen in Europe. And that we unfortunately expect the 2022 forest fire season could follow this trend.”

MIAMI — The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision reversing abortion rights is likely to energize efforts to curtail or ban the procedures throughout Latin America, where countries have been slowly moving toward allowing women greater reproductive rights, experts say.

WASHINGTON — As crowds grew in front of the U.S. Supreme Court in the aftermath of a landmark ruling eliminating the constitutional right to an abortion, Democratic Rep. Sharice Davids’ campaign announced that, in Kansas, it would gather the next morning.

A movement is growing to shorten the workweek, but trade-offs and barriers should be considered. A four-day workweek can be challenging, for example, if most everyone else is still working on that fifth day and you’re getting emails and messages as usual. Widespread adoption may depend on companies believing they need to switch to compete in the workforce. But consumer behavior, customer expectations and services would need to be reshaped. A solution may be greater flexibility around work hours, or perks such as occasional long weekends, message-free times or a reduction in meetings.

The British Royal Navy has seized a sophisticated shipment of Iranian missiles in the Gulf of Oman, pointing to the interdiction as proof of Tehran’s support for Yemen’s Houthi rebels in the embattled country. The British government statement on Thursday was striking in that it provided some of the strongest findings to date that Tehran is arming the Houthis against the Saudi-led military coalition with advanced weapons smuggled through the Persian Gulf. Citing a forensic analysis, the British navy linked the batch of rocket engines seized earlier this year to an Iranian-made cruise missile the Houthis used against Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. There was no comment from Iran.

Sri Lanka’s Central Bank has raised its  key interest rates to 14.50% and 15.50% to try to contain inflation that has added to the country's economic woes. Price hikes have been a severe blow, especially for the South Asian country's poor and vulnerable groups as they endure their country's worst economic crisis in memory. Sri Lankans have suffered months of acute shortages of essentials such as food, fuel, cooking gas and medicines. The central bank said it had raised its Standing Deposit Facility Rate and Standing Lending Facility Rate that it charges commercial banks by 100 basis points each to 14.50% and 15.50%, respectively.

That prompted the country’s military to launch a search for them. The mountaineers are now trying to come down on their own from Nanga Parbat, known as “Killer Mountain” because of its dangerous conditions.
